Commander Chris Kinkel called the meeting to order IAW VFW ritual.

 

Roll call of Officers: 9 Present, 4 Absent (2 Excused)

 

Distinguished Visitors: None

 

New Members: Robert Walshaw

Motion made and seconded to accept new members.

 

Initiation of new members: None

 

Minutes of 6 April 2009 meeting read and accepted with one amendment.

 

Quartermasters report read and accepted with no amendments.

 

Service Officers report: Absent

 

Member or family members in distress: None

 

Deceased Members: Lawrence “Doc” Dykers

 

Committee Reports:

Adopt a Road – Absent

 

Membership/Buddy poppy: Buddy Poppy – signup sheet up a month in advance, no volunteers. Membership 48 new, 168 continuous, 959 total.

 

Building: Some repairs were completed this past weekend, repairs will continue as time allows. Methods of raising funds for building repairs/maintenance were discussed. Minutes from a previous meeting had proceeds from 50/50 drawing going to building maintenance fund.

 

Land & Rec: 13 tons of Gravel provided by Krieg construction for only $186.17.

 

House: $1000 turned over to Quartermaster. Several expenses were questioned as being too high, Club Manager is looking into the reasons. Acquisition of QuickBooks was discussed; possibility of getting it for free being researched.

 

Golf:  Flyers available in the lobby. Should also be online shortly.

 

VOD/Youth Essay: No Report, done for this year. Trophies being finalized and delivered; only one left.

 

Trustees: Audit completed all items balanced.

 

Fundraising: Poker $415.00, 50/50 $474.50, Breakfast 63 people, $121.00. Pete Sill made a motion when the 50/50 pot got to $500, 50% go to the building fund, seconded by Cecil Pierce. Discussion ensued regarding 50/50 funds possibly going to building funds. Motion tabled until next meeting and research from previous meetings were reviewed. Minutes were reviewed from the August 06 meeting which verified that monies from the canteen 50/50 drawing were to be going to the building fund. No further discussion was held during the September meeting. Motion was reintroduced amended to start with the current drawing. Amendment passed with one nay vote.

 

Surgeon/Hospital: Blood drive still on for 13 Jun. Hospital equipment being returned and accounted for. Total value reported is $12,183.10, 2nd in the department for Hospital reports.

 

Safety: SR20 discussed and schedule of construction. Wind advisory mentioned for week of meeting.

 

Break

 

Unfinished business:

1.      Memorial Day parade: Still waiting for information from parade organizers.

2.      Flyers are up in town for Memorial Day Services.

 

Upcoming events: None mentioned.

 

New Business:

1.      Scholarship applications picked up from Coupeville. Scholarship committee meeting this Wednesday, 6pm.

2.      Mailing regulation changes brought up by Skip Johnson. 1003 newsletters being sent out. Eliminating out of state processes, we would save about $15 a month. Motion was made by Pete Sill to stop sending newsletter to members whose newsletters are returned, seconded by Cecil Pierce. Discussion followed. Motion passed by majority. Notification will be posted in the newsletters and the web site.

3.      Question was brought up by Pete Sill about tax issues. Quartermaster forgot to mention them in his report. Will be corrected in the future. Property tax issues were taken care of, back to original assessment with WA State DOR.

4.      Writing and discussion group for family and friends of veterans. Meetings to be held 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month in Freeland.

5.      Cecil Pierce brought up VA issues, primarily regarding medical issues. Also brought up the 9/11 GI bill. Mentioned a “district” hospice care house, dispersed flyers.

 

Good of the Order:

1.      Commander Chris Kinkel presented Stephen Clark with a post newsletter.

2.      Pete Sill presented 40 - 3’x5’ flags and one large flag to the Boy Scouts for proper disposal (burning).

3.      Mt Vernon VA clinic to be opened 1 June 2009.

4.      New Life member hat offered by the VFW.

5.      A Korean War veteran, listed as MIA has been found. His remains are being returned and will be interred at Arlington Nat’l Cemetery.

6.      District Representatives ARE allowed in the post. If a person isn’t known by someone, please welcome them and sign them in as guests unless the person has a membership card.
