Commander Keith Wooldridge called the meeting to order IAW VFW ritual.

Roll call of Officers: 9 present, 5 excused, 2 absent, 1 vacant, 4 additional members, 3 distinguished visitors.

Motion made and seconded, passed, to accept new members.

Minutes of Apr 7 meeting read and accepted.

Quartermasters report read and accepted.

Service Officers report: Replacement has completed training, should be full steam shortly.  Gary Cosner.

Committee Reports

Adopt-A-Road: Saturday morning 10th is next cleanup. 

Membership/Buddy Poppy: 735 Life, 25 New, 24 reinstates, 194 continuous, 94.13% total membership, $0 sales of buddy poppies. 

Building:  Dishwasher to be installed.

Land & Rec: Grass is green, Phil’s back, will get greener.

House: Turned over $2,500  to quartermaster.  Prices of liquor to go up June 1, beer to stay same.   Rules of conduct for bar is underway.

Golf: 19th of July for tournament.  Raffle to be held raising money for tournament.  Two saws to be raffled, one table saw, one chop saw. 

VOD/Youth Essay:  Delivery has been made of all certificates.  $2,400 has been awarded this year.  Going to first second and third per school, not per class for next year.

30 entries for the VOD from Oak Harbor, none from Coupeville.  Motion made and seconded to give both scholarships to Oak Harbor.  Seconded.  Discussed only giving one in case Coupeville does respond.  This is the first time Coupeville has not responded in numerous years.  Idea is to use available scholarships instead of not issuing one of them. Amendment made and seconded to give both to Oak Harbor this year only.   Passed.  Need three man committee to judging  entries and present the scholarships.

Trustees:  Audit balanced to the penny.  Kudos to the Canteen Manager and the Quartermaster.  Audit completed on time.

Fundraising: Texas Hold ‘Em still going strong. 50/50 still in progress.  Total approx $103.  Breakfast in April raised $217 dollars profit. 

Surgeon/Hospital: Next blood drive 6 June.

Safety: No report on highway 20.  Summer working in progress, biggest hazards are ladders and yard maintenance.

Upcoming Events:

Jr. Girls Unit State Conference June 6-8 tentatively. Will be camping in the campground.

Texas Hold “Em, Breakfast on 25th.  District Coffee Stop on May 16th 17th, 18th. Installation of our Officers on 17th.  19-21 June Department Convention.  24 May Parade in Coupeville.  11 AM parade, meet at 10:30.  26th is Memorial Day ceremony in Oak Harbor and Coupeville.  4th of July Parade coming soon.  Decision needs to be made regarding participation.  Post 239 dinner for Dick Whipple, Saturday May 31st.  July 13th, Dick Whipple day at Emerald Downs. Ladies Aux 974 Armed Forced Day Fundraiser at Fox Hall May 17th, 5 PM.

No Life member drawing.

50/50 drawing won by Brian Wilson.  Donated to the Scholarship Fund. 

 

Unfinished Business:

Motion made to only take scholarships from the Scholarship Fund.  Seconded.  Motion tabled until this meeting for research.  Research still in progress. Tabled until the next meeting.  Investigation revealed current practices regarding VOD, Youth Essay and Patriots Pen scholarships are perfectly legal.  Motion failed.

Motion made to investigate the cost of a recycling shed where the fat vat used to be.  Seconded, passed.  Pete for action.  Plans made, construction should be started shortly.

Flag pole rope.  Kinkel for action.  Rope is in, Quartermaster has not paid for it yet.  Rope will be picked up this week.

 

New Business :

Motion made for the Post to donate $100 to the Soroptimist campaign for a digital mammography machine.  Seconded.  Motion passed.

Motion made for the Post to purchase 25 memberships in an attempt to attain 100% and reach 1,000 members.   Seconded.  Passed.

 

Good Of The Order:

Check for $100 turned over to the Relief fund by Mary Cook for the memorial service.

Invitation from COMATKWING received to attend reception of first EA-18 Growler. June 3rd

E-Board meeting on July 13 to make recommendations for bylaws changes.

VFW Post service Officer training on June 27 2008.  Time 1300.

Newsletters. Postage return was required this time.  About 80-90 have been returned.  Post Office requires twice a year return postage.

Closing ceremonies held.

Incoming Dist 15 Commander Pierce discussed positions in District.  Skip Johnson to be new Guard.  Others stil needed.

District 3 Chief Of Staff – Mark Thompson spoke regarding upcoming elections and nominee Dick Whipple.

District 3 Commander – Krist Huseby III running for State Surgeon. 

District 15 Commander Rick Hamilton spoke highly of the service of this Post.  This Post develops leadership. 

Department Surgeon – Carlos Almida spoke.  Praised the hospital reports and Chairman for the assistance given.
