Veterans of Foreign Wars Announce Youth Essay Contests
(Oak Harbor) Whitehead-Muzzall Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7392, Oak Harbor invites local students to enter the annual VFW essay contests. Form and letters will soon be distributed to local schools. Completed forms and essays will be picked up at each school office on November 1, 2007.
Voice of Democracy is a recorded essay competition open to high school student in grades nine through twelve. This year’s theme is “My Role in Honoring America’s Veterans”. Cash prizes will be awarded for a first ($100), second ($75) and third ($50) place winner at each eligible school. The first place winners of each grade, as determined at our local Post level will have the opportunity to compete at VFW District level. District winners will advance to the State competition. Washington State’s winning entry will compete at the VFW national competition, where up to $25, 000 in scholarship money will be awarded.
Patriot’s Pen is the essay contest open to students in the sixth through eighth grades. This year’s theme is “Why I am An American Patriot”. Cash prizes will be awarded for a first ($50), second ($35) and third ($25) place winner at each eligible school. The first place winners of each grade, as determined at our local Post level will have the opportunity to compete at VFW District level. District winners will advance to the State competition. Washington State’s winning entry will compete at the VFW national competition, where a $10,000 savings bond will be awarded.
The Youth Essay competition is open to third through fifth grade students. This year’s theme is “Who Is My Hero, and Why?” Cash prizes will be awarded to the first ($50), second ($35) and third ($25) place winners at each eligible school. The first place winners of each grade, as determined at our local Post level will have the opportunity to compete at VFW District level. District winners will advance to the State competition.
These essay contests not only give students the opportunity to compete for prizes but also gives them an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas about this year’s patriotic themes.
